Summary of Position:
The new, part-time position is responsible for managing existing foundation and corporate foundation relationships, researching new grant prospects, and developing successful grant proposals for Safe Passage. The Grant Writer reports to the Director of Development and is based in our Maine office, working a mixture of on-site and remotely. This role offers a unique opportunity to help grow the grants program at a pivotal moment for the organization: on the heels of Safe Passage’s 20th anniversary, the board of directors has finalized a new five-year strategic plan that identifies new program areas in need of expansion. Additionally, we have just received an unprecedented foundation commitment of $1,000,000 over five years to help Safe Passage strengthen its organizational capacity and outcomes.

The Grant Writer will research and manage records tracked in Raiser’s Edge/NXT for foundation and corporate foundation partners and prospects, and track respective funding opportunities for Safe Passage. Opportunities may include foundations, corporations, and also government sources. This individual will collaborate with the U.S. and Guatemalan development teams in the research, writing and management of grants, and carefully manage grant proposals, reporting deadlines, and other stewardship needs. The Grant Writer will also collaborate with the Executive Director/Head of School on high level opportunities ($50k+) as needed.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the management of grants $5,000+ within the organization (this does not include individual gifts made through family foundations and DAF’s).
  • Actively research and identify international grant opportunities.
  • Work with the Director of Development to develop an annual grants strategy based on annual revenue goals.
  • Oversee the proposal submission process for the team to ensure high-quality proposal writing that includes program outcomes data and framework, and follow-up on the progress of submitted proposals.
  • Track proposal submission deadlines carefully, to allow ample time to collaborate with the Leadership Team in Guatemala as needed.
  • Collaborate with the US and Guatemala development teams in managing grant details and preparing grant progress reports.

Education and Professional Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of experience in grant/prospect research and writing.
  • Strong working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge/NXT (or similar database), Microsoft Office, and G-Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong ability to prioritize and manage projects to meet deadlines and goals.

Hours: 20 hours per week, non-exempt. $30 – $40 per hour.
This position can be a mixture of working remotely and on-site.
