Ways to Give

Safe Passage is fueled by the generous support of individuals from around the world, corporate partners, and grants. Your unrestricted gifts allow Safe Passage to fund core programs and services, respond to our communities’ greatest needs, and effectively manage our cash flow toward smooth operations and impactful outcomes.

Your monthly commitment helps us plan and strengthen our model year after year. As a monthly supporter, you will be part of a growing global community and enjoy biannual insider news. Currently, we receive around $30,000 per/month 13% of our monthly budget. We aim to increase monthly giving to $45,000 over the next year.

Many employers offer matching gift programs from 1X to 4X your gift or for volunteer hours made by their employees, retirees, and/or employees’ spouses. Any gift, such as an online contribution, your year-end giving total, or volunteer time, can potentially be matched.

Check with your HR office to inquire about your company’s charity matching policies or click here to check if your company matches. We are happy to assist with any paperwork to facilitate a match.

A gift of stock not only allows you to benefit from a possible tax deduction for supporting Safe Passage, but you will avoid paying any capital gains taxes.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) provides an opportunity to get more tax breaks for your generosity. DAFs allow you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support your favorite causes. You can establish a DAF at your local community foundation or with a financial brokerage such as Schwab, Fidelity, or Vanguard. You can then make a contribution to Safe Passage from your DAF.

You will need to have our name, contact info, and Tax ID number to initiate.

If you have questions about how your gift may be designated, please contact Development at (207) 292-2130.

You can make a charitable distribution from your IRA that has an immediate impact for Safe Passage and reduces your taxable income. How does it work?

You must be 70 ½ or older.

You may transfer up to $108,000 per year (2025 allowage).

Your gift must be transferred directly from your IRA account to Safe Passage’s account.

Your gift is a transfer of funds from your IRA to Safe Passage, so while you do not receive a charitable deduction, it does not create taxable income for you.

The most common and easiest way you can make a planned gift to Safe Passage is simply making a bequest by including language in your will or living trust that leaves a portion of your estate to the Safe Passage.

  • You can name Safe Passage as receiving a percentage of your estate or a specific cash value.
  • Should you include Safe Passage in your estate plans, please use the legal name Safe Passage and the Federal Tax ID number:01-0532835

Please do inform Safe Passage when you have included us in your will or as a beneficiary.

In 2007, following the death of Safe Passage’s founder Hanley Denning, an endowment fund was established to ensure Safe Passage’s strong future for generations of youth to come.

Two funds were created: a “Permanent Endowment,” which is not touched, and the “Unrestricted Endowment,” which can be used by a vote of the board within the parameters of its policy. Endowed funds play an important role in Safe Passage’s operations, providing approximately 3-5% percent of the annual budget revenue. Safe Passage seeks to continue to grow its Endowment Fund to support future generations of youth in Guatemala. Education is a long game; our model is proving the cycle of poverty can be broken with each child who has the opportunity to go to school and grow with Safe Passage. Our Endowment allows us to invest in our future by accepting additional students, retaining our talented teachers, and bolstering our wrap-around services that provide the tools for Safe Passage to grow as a Guatemalan-led and community-centered ecosystem.
