Hola a todos!

My name is Jess and I am a Support Teams Coordinator at Safe Passage.  My colleague, Owen, and I lead groups of short-term volunteers as they work with our program for a week at a time. Read more.

As a senior at Bowdoin College I got to know Safe Passage through participating in one of those Support Teams myself.  I left very impressed with the organization’s mission and holistic approach.  That first experience, combined with my interest in international development and love of Spanish, made it clear that I had to come back.

My time at Safe Passage began in September 2010 as a classroom assistant in 8th grade equivalent in the mornings and 2nd grade in the afternoon.  For the next three months I did everything from overseeing shower time and making sure kids got a fork at lunch to helping older students with algebra and complex fractions.    I began in my current position at the start of 2011 and have loved getting to know so many parts of the organization and so many interesting volunteers!

As Owen and I write we hope to give you, the reader, some insight into life at Safe Passage in Guatemala and all of the ways you can stay connected to this amazing community.  Everyone here–kids, mothers, fathers, teachers, social workers, long-term volunteers, and short-term volunteers–appreciates your attention!
