Special Notice:
Through a mandate from the Guatemalan government declared last March, all on-site school programs in the country were suspended to stop the spread of COVID-19. This, unfortunately, included our school at Safe Passage/Camino Seguro. During the closure, we have continued to ensure that the educational, emotional, health and nutritional needs of our students and families were safely met — and will continue to do so. We hope to open our school doors to our students in the coming months. As soon as it is prudent and safe, we look forward to hosting visitors again by 2022.
Hope. Education. Opportunity.
Who We Are
Empowering People and Advancing Progress in a Place of Great Poverty
Between languages and latitudes, between extreme poverty and extraordinary achievement, there is Safe Passage - serving the community surrounding the largest garbage dump in Central America.
A top-rated educational nonprofit working in Guatemala City since 1999, Safe Passage is a Pre-K through 9th grade school with a holistic approach that expands the definition of education. We mitigate underlying factors that contribute to poor educational outcomes by bringing hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families through a combination of innovative and evidence-based curriculum, health, and nutritional services.
Safe Passage at a Glance
What does a typical day at Safe Passage look like? Watch a first-hand account by following sixth grade student Edinzon as he navigates his day, including attending his favorite class, eating lunch with his friends, and going on an expedition. With the help of Safe Passage, students like Edinzon can break the cycle of poverty through the power of education.
