The Guatemala City garbage dump is about 12 football fields (40 acres) in size - and growing. It holds more than 1/3 of the entire country´s waste.
Over 920 privately-owned garbage trucks enter the dump 3 times daily, for a total of nearly 3,000 loads delivered per day.
Workers sift through trash, collecting recyclables they later sell to recyclers. 100 lbs of material can earn Q5-Q15 (about $0.50 - $2.50).
The workers at the dump provide a very important service to Guatemala City, removing hundreds of thousands of tons of trash to be recycled every year.
The dump holds trash from the 3 million people living in Guatemala City and 4 surrounding towns. As there are no regulations on the disposal of garbage, toxic waste, hospital waste, residential waste, and business waste mix together.
