OPORTUNIDADES + PRÓXIMOS PASOS

The Camino Beyond Graduation.

The Oportunidades program provides ongoing academic and emotional support for students at the high school level. Students attend local high schools, where class time typically lasts four hours per day, and then attend Oportunidades for supplemental support.

Through Oportunidades, students receive tutoring, leadership and life skills workshops, intensive technology and English instruction and certification, mentorship and access to our Comprehensive Wellness services — all designed to build independence, confidence, and increase opportunities in the job market and higher education.

The Próximo Paso program extends that support into early adulthood. Graduates explore professional pathways, apprenticeships, and higher education opportunities that lead to dignified employment and lifelong learning. Ninety-five percent of participants secure meaningful work, contributing to their families and communities with purpose and pride.

Each student who moves forward carries the strength of the community with them — transforming the cycle of poverty into a cycle of growth and transformation.

Marcia Bernbaum, PhD, an experienced applied researcher and program evaluator, visited Safe Passage in July 2024 to assess the impact of Oportunidades and Proximo Paso. Through in-depth interviews with 15 young program affiliates, staff, and stakeholders, Bernbaum published a comprehensive report inclusive of interviews, results, and recommendations.
