Our mission: We help children in the Guatemala City garbage dump community break the cycle of poverty through education, emphasizing life skills and perseverance in order to thrive in work and contribute to their community.
We are a top-rated charity working in Guatemala City since 1999 to bring hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families trying to make a living around the city’s garbage dump—one of the largest landfills in Central America.
Inspired by the vision of our founder, Hanley Denning, we are educators, healthcare providers, donors and volunteers from around the world. Together we educate nearly 500 children and 100 adults from nearly 300 families. We guide our students as they achieve their goals and change their lives.
Safe Passage started with one woman’s humble vision to touch the lives of the poorest, most at-risk children in Guatemala City and has grown significantly since our early days in 1999. Read our history.
