"I went to Bowdoin College – where Hanley Denning studied – and traveled to Safe Passage on a Support Team through the Alternative Spring Break Program when I was a senior in college. I was inspired by her vision that anyone could travel to Guatemala, roll up their sleeves, and make a difference, so I moved there after graduation!

After living in Guatemala and working at Safe Passage for two years, I can't imagine going a single day without thinking about those kids. I stay involved by sponsoring a child and by helping to raise money for Safe Passage so it can be sustainable for years to come. When I moved back to my native Vermont, I joined another former volunteer, Liz Mcelhinney and we founded the Vermont Friends of Safe Passage. Last year we held our first annual Vermont Esperanza 5K, and with about 100 runners, we raised $7,000. I recently joined the Safe Passage Development Committee where I help guide our outreach and fundraising efforts. I plan to stay involved and hope any Vermonters will join us in supporting the kids at Safe Passage."
