On September 15th, Central America celebrated 191 years of independence from the Spanish Crown. Safe Passage chose to celebrate this historic day with our students on Monday, September 10th, with the traditional torch run (la Antorcha) along with a civic engagement activity at the Safe Passage Educational Reinforcement Center.

The torch run commemorates the independence of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, all of which gained their independence on the same date.  It is an annual tradition that starts at the Obelisk in Zone 10 of Guatemala City and, for Safe Passage, ends at the Educational Reinforcement Center in Zone 7.
