It’s a new year at Safe Passage which means more fun experiences and more Support Teams!
Christiana and Jessa are the new Support Team Coordinators and are super excited to be a part of such an inspiring and hard-working organization.
Jessa: I was born and raised in Maryland and graduated from Towson University with a degree in Psychology after studying abroad in Peru. During college, I worked with a non-profit organization in Honduras leading volunteer trips and fundraising.
After my own transformational volunteer trip five years ago, I wanted to play a role in that experience for others. I could not be more proud to be a part of the incredible work Safe Passage is doing to empower children and families in Guatemala. Stumped on fundraising ideas? I’m your go-to person! I enjoy yoga, hiking, and making sandwiches.
Christiana: I am from South Carolina but grew up in both Costa Rica and the US. I graduated with a degree in Modern Languages from Winthrop University and have worked with various non-profits throughout Peru. Inspired by Hanley’s story and Safe Passage’s mission, I joined the team in order to continue supporting non-profit work in Latin America. Self-conscious about your Spanish abilities? I love giving grammar lessons! In my free time, I like baking, pilates, and foreign films.
Being a part of a Support Team is such a special and unique experience. Team members visit Safe Passage and volunteer for one week at the project, beginning with a visit to a look-out over the dump in order to understand the reality Safe Passage kids and parents face every day. During the week, teams assist in our Jardín Infantil, help out in the English classes, and organize activities to carry out in different classrooms. At the end of the week teams go on a fun excursion with one of the classes they have been working with, which the kids LOVE!
If you, or somebody you know, are interested in organizing a Support Team, please get in touch with us via email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Our 2014 calendar is filling up, but there are still many spaces available so please feel free to email us – we’d love to hear from you! To those teams who have already signed up, we look forward to meeting you and having an amazing week together!
