After months of organization and planning, on Saturday, February 8, Radio Corporación Nacional (RCN) and Safe Passage started a school supply donation drive called Sé Útil Por Los Niños with optimism and excitement. The event was a success thanks to the generosity of Guatemalans who answered call that RCN and Safe Passage made throughout January via radio spots, interviews and social media.

The goal: 2,000 bags with school supplies for Safe Passage students. The only incentive to donate: solidarity and generosity. Hundreds of children, youth and adults visited the parking lot of the Mall in zone 4 of Guatemala City to bring donations from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. It was a busy day full of happiness and joy. The event had live broadcasts, interviews, music, dancing, laughter and most importantly teamwork.

While the last live broadcast was thanking those who supported the campaign, a team of about 40 people began working to put together bags of school supplies. Those bags were given to Safe Passage after the event ended.

At the end of the day, with a lot of energy still, the team received the bags and transported them to Safe Passage building. The bags contained basic materials like notebooks, pencils, glue, scissors, etc. In addition to the bags with school supplies, Safe Passage received boxes with educational materials for classrooms, books, magazines, among others.

Thanks to RCN for organizing this event! The effort and work to carry out this campaign was worth it. Now, Safe Passage has thousands more school supplies for the children attending to our programs. Also, Safe Passage gives thanks to all Guatemalans who shared with our children by bringing their donations.

These tools will empower students to become successful professionals in the future.
