Our youngest students and those who care for them at the Escuelita received an early holiday gift this fall – a dishwasher and solar water heater! These may not seem like top items on every child’s wish list, but they promise to go a long way in promoting good health and happier kitchen staff.
In 2006, members of Rotary Club #6685 from Weymouth, MA spent their first week at Safe Passage as a Support Team. They were assigned to work with our youngest students in the Guarderia, temporarily housed in a dark, poorly ventilated warehouse. Despite the long days and warm temperatures, these visitors fell in love with our students and their incredible potential – and returned to Massachusetts to share our story with others.
Since then, the WEymouth Rotarians have formed lasting relationships with Safe Passage students as sponsors and on annual team visits. Former club president Steve Certa, after spending many team weeks lending a hand in the kitchen, saw an opportunity for his club to make a tangible contribution to the Escuelita. With support from his club, he applied for and won a District Grant to install a new sanicommercial dishwasher and solar water heater. Steve visited this October to oversee the installation and will be returning with club members in the spring to see the impact of their efforts. Now that our kitchen staff have a sanitizing dishwasher on their hands, we want to thank the Weymouth Rotary and all of our generous donors who make tangible steps forward like this possible.
