Our youngest students learn through play, as children do naturally, but what happens when we employ the same learning methodologies to a Safe Passage all-staff workshop?

Starting the year with collaboration

At the start of each new school year at Safe Passage, our new staff members join our seasoned staff members for training and workshops that focus on various topics. One of our workshops this year, in collaboration with Jugando por la Paz, focused on several values:

  • better organization-wide communication
  • working as a team to increase efficiency
  • sharing new ideas and celebrating team success

Learning to work together to achieve common goals
2016 marks our 17th year of providing hope, education, and opportunity for students and their families in the Guatemala City garbage dump community. With the addition of new staff, new students, and the implementation of our new teaching methodology based on Expeditionary Learning, there are many things to celebrate at Safe Passage this year.

To ensure that our new school year transitions as smooth as possible, we focused our staff workshops on bringing departments together and generating organization-wide enthusiasm to achieve our goals together.

During our Jugando por la Paz workshop, staff reflected on what it takes to have teamwork by playing different games that focus on trust, communication, and responsibility.

When our staff feels comfortable with one another, they create a strong foundation that our students can depend upon throughout the school year.
