Results of Our Programs

We estimate that from children to parents to entire families in the community, Safe Passage has affected the lives of more than 3,000 people in Guatemala City's poorest Zones.

The greatest gift that can be given to an impoverished child is the opportunity to grow into a life of self-sufficiency.  Safe Passage provided an opportunity for over 550 children to attend public or private school for the year.  More than 85% of the students passed their grade.  This is a step towards becoming self-sufficient.

29 more students beat the odds and became the first in their families to graduate from Diversificado (similar to a community college structure).  These students are now either working or taking pre-university classes.

33 more mothers and 7 fathers graduated from our literacy program with a 6th grade diploma. Most are continuing with their studies with a scholarship from Safe Passage.  These parents have overcome huge obstacles just to be able to attend literacy classes every day.  Many of them continue to work during off hours and caring for their families.  They are all united by a shared belief that every person has potential and they are finding theirs and their children's.

To change young lives and impact a community requires preparing students with skills that will help them earn a living in a safe and dignified manner.  Each child participates in one half hour of English classes per day and weekly computer training classes.  These programs serve a dual purpose; they teach a practical skill, and they instill discipline.  With these two skills, students are able to gain entrance into the work field.
