Suzanne has twice volunteered at the Guarderia, with Safe Passage's youngest children. Back home, she volunteers with the Netherlands Friends of Safe Passage to raise funds and awareness for the program.
"My name is Suzanne, and I am from the Netherlands. In 2008, I was a volunteer at Safe Passage for six weeks, and I worked at the Guardería in Fidelia's class with the babies. I loved working with the little kids! Back home, I joined the Dutch
Friends Group of Camino Seguro, and after a couple of months, I decided to go back to Guatemala and stay as a long-term volunteer.
"In January I started as a volunteer with the two-year-olds, and I was so happy seeing the kids again and seeing how they have grown! After a couple of weeks, I transitioned to the position of Site Coordinator at the Guardería. It is so great to get to know more and more about the children and their families, the project and the volunteers.
"When it is free playtime and the kids are running and playing on the playground, some kids ask me to push them in the swing. Sometimes I have to think about how something so simple as pushing a kid on a swing can make him smile.
"I feel so fortunate being here and working with so many nice and fabulous people who all are dedicated to continuing the work that Hanley started ten years ago. Together we want to give each of the children the opportunity to be a child and to play as a child."
