Madeline

Madeline volunteers as one of the three Teams Coordinators at Safe Passage. Here, she poses with co-coordinators (from left) Denise and Rachel, who all work to welcome and support the Team members who come to volunteer at Safe Passage each week.
Q: What do you like about working with Teams?
A: I like the see the connection that the Team members are able to make and maintain with the children of Safe Passage.  Relationships are formed so quickly even when those involved don't speak a common language.

Q: What is a memorable moment?
A: Last fall, the B-boyz, Safe Passage's break dancing club, were practicing in the cafeteria, so I brought my team of high-school volunteers into watch.  Not before long, the B-boyz were teaching the team some basic moves and showing off their skills.  It was great to see them sharing their talents and urban culture with the volunteers.

Q: How do you think Team members contribute to Safe Passage?
A: The volunteers that come down as a Support Team are like a breath of fresh air for Safe Passage.  They bring so much energy, positivity, and willingness to work.  The children just feed off of that energy and it lifts all of our spirits.

Q: Why should someone come to volunteer at Safe Passage?
A: There are so many reasons one should volunteer with Safe Passage, but the most basic and most important is if you like to make a child smile, come volunteer.  We are all here to better the lives of these children and even if you can only be with us a short while, your laughter, energy, and positive attitude are appreciated by all.

Q: Anything else?
A: We hope that visiting us in a Support Team will only be the beginning of your relationship with Safe Passage.  Many Team members continue to support us through friends groups, through sponsorship, or as long-term volunteers.  So I invite you to come down to Guatemala and learn, as past Team members have, that once you meet the children of Safe Passage, it is impossible to forget them!
