Irma

Irma, age 30, mother of three kids, has been with Adult Literacy and CREAMOS for almost 2 years. Her son, now 18, has studied with Safe Passage for several years.

"I am grateful that what I didn’t have, my kids now have. When I was 13, I was living alone in the streets. When I was 14, I had my first child alone. I didn’t have anyone to turn to when I was scared, sad, or to even tell that I was happy. But, I fought to keep my son and protect him. Now, my children have what I didn’t. They have a roof over their heads and a mother to greet them when they get home from school. I am proud of what I am now and who I’ve become.

"I am grateful for the opportunities that Safe Passage has given me—to have a company [the women’s jewelry cooperative CREAMOS], to learn how to read and write, and to help my children. I am grateful for their continued support even when it’s difficult … when my children don’t want to study. I’m grateful that we’re not below [in the garbage dump] anymore, risking our lives. Now, I’m not ignorant, I know how to read and write. Now, we work as a family."
