Santiago was featured in a recent Safe Passage e-newsletter because of his outstanding computer skills and his need for a sponsor. More specifically, Lisa and Cindy from Safe Passage’s sponsorship team were hoping that a “big brother” or “big sister” might choose to support Santiago by becoming his sponsor. A sponsor’s encouragement could help him stay focused when he's in school, giving him the support and direction he needs to keep developing his gift for computers. Santiago was thrilled not only with the positive attention to his talent but also with the exciting news that came next: he would indeed have a sponsor!
Ever since Santiago was recognized at Safe Passage as a computer star, he has really come out of his shell. In art class, he was asked to draw and paint a time when he feels loved. Santiago chose to draw a table with two chairs, and he drew lots of markers and pencils on the table. He drew Thursdays with Sponsorship and Cindy. He feels most loved when she is spending time with him, while he’s drawing and writing to his sponsor.
Santiago has many reasons to be proud of himself, among them: his computer skills, artistic expression, self-awareness, and meaningful relationships with people like Cindy and his sponsor. And as a teenager in Guatemala City, his coming to Safe Passage allows him to continue developing those traits, strengths, and connections that are most rewarding and transformative.
There are many Safe Passage children still in need of a sponsor. You are invited to learn more about becoming a sponsor – and changing a life – on our Sponsorship page.
