Becoming Sustainable Artists

The street art club has begun a collaborative effort with the moms of Creamos, a handmade jewelry company affiliated with Camino Seguro. The moms have begun expanding their business to also include retail object such as hand-sewn tee shirts and burlap messenger bags. With these objects, the street art team plans to paint custom designs and tags to then be sold.

Our Youngest Supporters

It is always impressive when a person decides to donate their time and effort to help someone else. It’s even more impressive when that person is under the age of 11. Such is the case for Amanda Herman (9) of Michigan, Lia Pachino ( 8) of North Carolina,  Dori Chapman (6) of Georgia, and Rosie Simpson (11) of the Virgin Islands. Although these girls have never met, or even heard of one another, each of them decided to raise funds for the children of Safe Passage this holiday season. Together, they donated over $650 to our program.

Uniformes, School Supplies and a Census

During January, the Safe Passage team worked together on delivering the Class Start-up Packages for our students and families. The Class Start-up Package holds each student’s basic needs for the 2013 school year, including: a backpack, one uniform, a pair of tennis shoes and a pair of dress shoes, and school supplies. The Uniform and Supply Department, Social Entrepreneurship, and many volunteers managed to successfully deliver the supplies, backpacks, uniforms and shoes to each student in a well-organized and efficient manner. After receiving their supplies, the students were photographed with their families while holding their Class
Start-up Packages.

Taking the Next Step

This year, Safe Passage is taking a big step in supporting our older students, as they prepare their bright futures after graduation, and our graduates, who have just launched themselves into the real world. Our Proximo Paso, or Next Step Program, will provide professional development training (think resume building, interview practice, and networking support) along with relevant field trips and activities for our current students and graduates. The program will also support recent graduates as they begin the job and higher education application processes. Finally, a long-term goal of this program is to develop a strong and vibrant alumni community.
