Próximo Paso´s first steps

Safe Passage high school students and teachers learning about the advances mad at the Universidad Rafael Landívar en its engineering and science programs.

Our graduates overcame enormous challenges and, with the support of Safe Passage and their families, have accomplished what very few individuals in these communities have: promotion from secondary education. When we first began the Proximo Paso program this year, my singular focus was to find formal employment our high school graduates, so that they could support themselves and their families.

Taking the Next Step

This year, Safe Passage is taking a big step in supporting our older students, as they prepare their bright futures after graduation, and our graduates, who have just launched themselves into the real world. Our Proximo Paso, or Next Step Program, will provide professional development training (think resume building, interview practice, and networking support) along with relevant field trips and activities for our current students and graduates. The program will also support recent graduates as they begin the job and higher education application processes. Finally, a long-term goal of this program is to develop a strong and vibrant alumni community.

From the Dump to Nursing School

Participation in a Mother/Daughter Week at Safe Passage provides a rare glimpse into the lives of some of our families. Most staff and volunteers get to know the community more singularly—focusing on one age group or one subject, but these weeks allow us to pick mothers from our adult literacy program and their daughters in our program and get to know them as a unit. Perhaps more importantly, it is a chance for these mothers and daughters to spend quality time with one another—something a girl with 5 or more siblings may not normally enjoy.
