Teen Mothers

The majority of the children that we work with are being raised by their mothers in single parent households. These mothers lack practical skills and education and as a result, have limited options with which to support their children. They work long hours, often in hazardous conditions and still struggle to make ends meet.
In an effort to break this difficult and oppressive cycle, Safe Passage is committed to empowering teenage girls through education and vocational training.
The children who began with Safe Passage in 1999 are now young adults. They are growing up in one of the most dangerous and difficult areas in Guatemala City and have overcome enormous challenges in order to pursue their education.
Even so, the risks are great and Safe Passage is making every effort to provide young mothers with the additional support, training and guidance they need to be self sufficient members of their communities.
