community garden
In June 2006, 15 Master’s level landscape design students from the University of Washington in Seattle came to Safe Passage to design and develop a community garden at our new early intervention and vocational training center. Under the direction of Professor Daniel Winterbottom, the students presented several designs and then implemented the final design for phase one of the creation of the community garden.

community gardenFor five weeks the students worked diligently, digging through layers of garbage, hitting water pipes, and working through mud. The result is a beautiful garden for both the children and their families to enjoy! Winterbottom expressed “I think it’s critical that every child have a nurturing, healthy and inspired childhood. Without that, the chance of becoming a productive, confident adult is put at risk. For these children much of their childhood has been stripped and it is our hope that through this garden some of that childhood and some of that pain and loss can be repaired. So much is learned through a child’s curiosity. A simple investigation through nature can lead to significant realizations and foster a stronger curiosity for knowledge.”
